August 13, 2010- Found Boat
A gentleman called the Shapleigh Town Hall this morning about a boat he found drifting in Square Pond. He towed it to the Treasure Island ferry beach and left it near the dock where the Treasure Island residents dock their boats. He says it is a wreck and has no registration numbers. He called the game warden, but felt nothing is going to be done about it.
If you have any questions you can call Ira Camp, 207-205-2977.

July 11, 2010- Baby Loon Removed from Square Pond
Just to let you loon-watchers know: I received an email yesterday. There was a baby loon that had been separated from it's parents, and after calling the Center for Wildlife with their concerns, it was determined that to capture the loon and bring it to them would be the best chance for survival for the baby. It is thought that this might be the 2nd of two babies, that had been pushed out of it's nest-since we know that parent loons are diligent protectors, and in normal conditions-do no leave their side. So, the chick was transported by our caring friends on Square Pond to Cape Neddick's Center. Anavian expert told them that the chick was no more than a couple days old, and still had the egg tooth on his bill. They thought it might have been a second hatchling that the first chick might have pushed out of the nest-thus assuring it's own survival. It will spend the summer with a loon rehabilitator there, and unfortunately, it will not return to Square Pond, but will be released in the fall in either Freeport or a nearby lake. We do have the chick's registration number, so will be able to get updates from time to time. If anyone on the lake has information that would help to establish more precisely how this chick was separated from it's parents, the Center for Wildlife and the rest of us would like to know. We will post pictures of the baby loon that was captured when we get them. A special thanks to Marsha Letourneau for passing on this information, and to her family for notice the chick, and know to do something! Any information, please email: president@squarepondme.com
July 11, 2010- BUOYS
Please!! It has come to our attention, that the buoys are being moved, or sunk in their location. DO NOT move or violate the buoys. This can cause damage to boats or props and cost alot of money unneccesarily. Our buoy master spends alot of time and preparation (volunteers)-to ensure they are placed and maintained. It is disheartening to know that those of us that love and live on this lake might be taking this for granted. If you know of anyone that is taking part in this, please encourage them to not touch or move them. Thanks, in advance!
